E-Mobility Act/Electromobility Act (EmoG)
EmoG: The law for electromobility in Germany
The Electric Mobility Act (EmoG), also known as the Act on Prioritizing the Use of Electrically Powered Vehicles, has been in force since June 6, 2015. It is intended to promote electric mobility in Germany and is set to expire on December 31, 2026. The German Mobility Act gives electric cars, fuel cell vehicles and certain plug-in hybrids special privileges in road traffic.
The EmoG offers companies, the self-employed and tradespeople an attractive opportunity to make their fleet mobility more efficient and cost-effective.
E-mobility law: advantages at a glance
The EmoG grants vehicles with an e-license plate various rights that can make everyday life considerably easier:
- Use of bus and special lanes (if approved by the local authority)
- Electric Mobility Act Parking: Reduced or waived parking fees
- Reserved public parking spaces, also with charging stations
- Removal of transit and access restrictions
Important: The law creates the legal basis, but does not oblige local authorities to implement these benefits. Companies should therefore check which benefits actually apply in their own area of activity.
Which vehicles benefit from the e-mobility law?
According to § 2 and § 3 EmoG, these vehicle types benefit:
- Battery electric vehicles (BEV)
- Fuel cell vehicles (FCEV)
- Plug-in hybrids (PHEV)which since January 1, 2025 either
- emit a maximum of 50 g CO₂ per km or
- have an electric range of at least 80 km.
This will tighten the funding conditions and focus more strongly on sustainability.
E-license plate: Prerequisite for preferential treatment
Companies and private individuals need an e-license plate to be able to take advantage of the law on electromobility. This makes the vehicle immediately recognizable and enables access to the privileges.
The label is voluntary, but practically essential. This is because the benefits of the E-mobility Act cannot be claimed without an e-license plate.
Electric Mobility Act: Summary for companies
The EmoG gives electrically powered vehicles concrete advantages in road traffic. For companies, this means
- More efficient journeys thanks to time savings (e.g. less searching for a parking space)
- Reduction of operating costs through more favorable parking regulations
- Better planning in urban areas
- Strengthening the sustainable corporate image
Who the Electric Mobility Act not only optimizes the efficiency of its fleet, but also positions itself as a modern and climate-conscious company.
Conclusion: Why the Electric Mobility Act is worthwhile
The 2015 Electric Mobility Act paved the way for the promotion of e-vehicles in Germany. Until the end of 2026, local authorities can grant concessions that pay off, especially in urban areas.
Companies that rely on electric or hybrid vehicles and equip them with an e-license plate secure legal advantages and strengthen their sustainability strategy at the same time.
Tip: Check which electromobility laws apply in your region and how your company can benefit from the EmoG advantages.
